Protecting the Rights of Way on the Common

The Common is part of the North Wessex Downs AONB, and as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is covered by the same protection as our National Parks. The Common should be open for all to enjoy without destroying this natural amenity. As such the Parish Council have been looking at the means of implementing a total ban on all motorised vehicles from Common land (with the exception of prescripted rights of access and for maintenance).

Following correspondence from DEFRA their advice is that we have to provide evidence and log damage and frequency.

The Temporary Traffic restrictions will be removed from April 1st and as a consequence the common is open to more destruction by 4 x 4 and trials bikes which is both socially and environmentally unacceptable.

How can you help?

We just need you to log any occurrence of motorised vehicles. Many vehicles will be there legally other will not but please do not put yourself in a danger.

  • Take note of the type of vehicle.
  • Location, where they are on the Common.
  • Approximate time and date.
  • If applicable take note of any damage that may have been caused.
  • Then send us an email or text to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

We will confidentially log all the information, and withhold your details. Please do not apprehend anyone or put yourself in any danger.

The intention is to present sufficient information to get a total ban on motorised traffic, throughout the year as per the Ridgeway.
